ONCE WASN’T ENOUGH
The first time I set off around the world in a Land Rover, the plan was to be away for 18 months.
Eight years later, I finally made it home.
You’d think that might have been enough.
Apparently not.
IT WAS ONLY SUPPOSED TO BE 18 MONTHS.
The original plan was fairly straightforward. Leave Cornwall in my Land Rover Defender, drive to Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America, and be back in about 18 months.
That was the plan, anyway.
There wasn’t one particular reason. I was enjoying life on the road, discovering new places, meeting people and finding that there was always somewhere else I wanted to explore.
Of course, travelling for that long doesn’t happen without a few practical considerations. Every now and then I’d have to stop somewhere, find some work and earn enough money to keep going.
Once I’d saved enough, I’d get back behind the wheel and carry on.
It wasn’t always glamorous, and things certainly didn’t always go according to plan. But that was part of the experience.
The longer I travelled, the less important the original timetable became.
What started as an 18-month adventure had gradually become a way of life.
And before I knew it, eight years had passed.
